Salih Muslim Family: Mam Jalal’s Legacy Remains Part of Kurdish History

The family of Salih Muslim has issued a message marking the anniversary of the passing of President Mam Jalal Talabani, honouring his long history of struggle and his role in Kurdish political life.

The following is the text of the message:

With respect, honour and affection, we remember Mam Jalal Talabani, one of the most prominent and influential figures in modern Kurdish politics, who dedicated his life to the struggle for the rights, freedom and political existence of the Kurdish people.

Mam Jalal was more than a political leader. He was a defining figure in modern Kurdish history who, during some of its most difficult and complex periods, worked to ensure that the voice of the Kurdish people was heard and to strengthen relations and cooperation among the different parts of Kurdistan.

At a time when the fight against ISIS and other terrorist forces was placing a heavy burden on the region, Rojava and its Kurdish population were experiencing one of the most challenging periods in their history.

During that period, the political support and position of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) towards Rojava and its people, alongside efforts to strengthen Kurdish unity and ties, were of great importance.

Those years demonstrated that when the very existence and identity of the Kurdish people are under threat, artificial borders must not become barriers to Kurdish solidarity. Rojava became a symbol of Kurdish resilience during that period, and every expression of support for Rojava carried particular significance within the shared history of the Kurdish people.

As we commemorate Mam Jalal, we do not simply remember a political leader; we recall a history of struggle, sacrifice and the enduring efforts of the Kurdish people to protect their identity, language, land and political rights.

On the anniversary of the passing of this historic figure, we extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to his family, relatives, comrades and all those who continue to hold Mam Jalal dear.

We honour the memory of Mam Jalal Talabani with respect and pride.

May his soul rest in peace, may his memory remain honoured, and may his name endure in the history of the Kurdish people.
