Adnan Mufti, a veteran struggler within the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and PUK Politburo Member Saadi Ahmed Pire, along with an accompanying delegation, received an Egyptian delegation of academics and intellectuals led by Ambassador Sherif Shahin, a diplomat and former Egyptian Ambassador to Iraq.

The meeting was attended by Rebaz Berkoti, a member of the PUK Leadership Council and head of the PUK’s Third Headquarters in Erbil; Samko Halmet, Assistant to Qubad Talabani for Arab Relations Affairs; and Dr Yasin Rauf Rasul, the PUK representative in Egypt.

On behalf of the delegation, Ambassador Shahin thanked the PUK officials for their warm welcome and highlighted the longstanding historical relations between the late President Mam Jalal and Egypt’s political leaders, intellectual circles and diplomatic community.

The former Egyptian ambassador to Iraq said President Mam Jalal, as a prominent leader of the Kurdish liberation movement and later as Iraq’s first elected president, had maintained strong, historic and deep-rooted diplomatic relations with Egypt and its leaders.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue discussions aimed at strengthening cultural and intellectual ties. They also stressed the importance of continuing along the wise path of President Mam Jalal and building bridges of cooperation between academic and cultural institutions in Cairo and the Kurdistan Region.

The visiting delegation expressed its full readiness to cooperate in the fields of archives, historical research, joint activities and conferences involving Iraq, the Kurdistan Region and the Arab Republic of Egypt.
