President Mam Jalal.
Tuncer Bakırhan, co-chair of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), paid tribute to the late President Mam Jalal on the anniversary of his passing, describing his political legacy as evidence that the Kurdish people’s existence cannot be erased through denial, oppression or conflict, and that a lasting solution requires recognition of the Kurdish people’s will and space for democratic politics.
Nine years ago today, on 3 October 2017, former Iraqi President and national leader Jalal Talabani, widely known as Mam Jalal, passed away in Berlin, Germany, at the age of 83.
Bakırhan wrote in a post on X: “We commemorate Mam Jalal with respect on the anniversary of his passing. He was a historic figure in the Kurdish people’s struggle for freedom.”
“Mam Jalal’s political life stands as a significant testament to the fact that the existence of the Kurdish people cannot be erased through denial, oppression or conflict. Rather, the path to a solution lies in recognising the will of the Kurdish people and paving the way for democratic politics," he added.
“Even today, in the face of mindsets that view Kurdish achievements as a threat, the struggle for equality among peoples, a democratic solution and a dignified peace remains a vital priority,” he said.
“Mam Jalal’s dream was a future in which Kurdish people, wherever they live, could freely exist with their own identity, language and political will,” he added.
“We commemorate Mam Jalal with respect and will continue our journey towards a free life, following the path of his dreams,” he said.
