From Erbil to Baghdad: Nine Years of Commemorating President Mam Jalal

One of the ceremonies held to commemorate the anniversary of the death of President Mam Jalal.

Ceremonies have been held annually to commemorate the death of former Iraqi President and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) secretary general President Mam Jalal [Jalal Talabani], who died on 3 October 2017.

Fifth Anniversary

On 3 October 2022, a ceremony marking the fifth anniversary of the death of President Mam Jalal was held at Saad Abdullah Hall in Erbil.

Sixth Anniversary

On 3 October 2023, a ceremony marking the sixth anniversary of Talabani’s death was held in Baghdad under the supervision of former Iraqi President Dr Abdullatif Jamal Rashid.

The event was attended by Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and Qubad Talabani, head of the Secretariat Bureau of President Mam Jalal, along with a number of political and government figures.

Seventh Anniversary

On 3 October 2024, the President Jalal Talabani Foundation (PJTF), headed by Ambassador Dr Mohammed Sabir, held a ceremony in Kirkuk to mark the seventh anniversary of President Mam Jalal’s death.

The ceremony was attended by former Iraqi President Dr Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, former Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, Qubad Talabani, head of the Secretariat Bureau of President Mam Jalal, as well as a number of government and political figures.

Eighth Anniversary

On 3 October 2025, the PJTF and the Secretariat Bureau of President Mam Jalal held a ceremony at the conference hall of the University of Sulaimani to commemorate the eighth anniversary of President Mam Jalal's death.

The event was attended by the PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani; Qubad Talabani, head of the Secretariat Office of President Mam Jalal; PJTF President Dr Mohammed Sabir; and Kosar Mohammed, President of the University of Sulaimani.

A number of Iraqi and Kurdistan Region government and political figures, as well as ambassadors and consuls accredited to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, also attended the ceremony, which drew a large gathering.

Ninth Anniversary

A ceremony marking the ninth anniversary of the death of President Mam Jalal is scheduled to be held in Baghdad on 3 October 2026.
