PUK Politburo: PUK Remains Committed to President Mam Jalal's Political Vision

The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) issued an official statement marking the ninth anniversary of the passing of President Mam Jalal [Jalal Talabani], stating that to this day, President Mam Jalal’s foundational principles remain central to Iraq's political process. It also reaffirmed that Under the leadership of President Bafel Jalal Talabani, the PUK honours President Mam Jalal's legacy and remains steadfastly committed to his political vision. 

Saturday, 3 October 2026, marks nine years since the death of President Mam Jalal, who remains a central figure in Iraq's political history and a pioneer of the Kurdish national movement.

The Political Bureau's message reads:

Nine years have passed since the eternal departure of our national and patriotic leader, President Mam Jalal. Today, more than ever, the noble values for which he struggled stand reaffirmed as a guiding light for the people of Kurdistan and Iraq—a path leading to the success of a constitutional, federal state grounded in political partnership, balance, and democratic governance.

Thanks to his clear strategic vision and profound understanding of regional and global dynamics, President Mam Jalal dedicated nearly seven decades to a comprehensive struggle across party organisation, ideology, culture, and the Peshmerga movement. He played a pivotal role in leading the PUK and our people's 'New Revolution', safeguarding the Kurdistan experience, and—following the liberation of Iraq—laying the foundations of a post-dictatorship constitutional state.

At the pinnacle of his lifelong struggle, President Mam Jalal became the first Peshmerga and the first democratically elected leader to assume the presidency of the Federal Republic of Iraq. In this role, he stood as the constitutional defender of the rights of the Kurdish people and all Iraqi communities, serving as a pillar of stability as the nation transitioned to a parliamentary system.

To this day, President Mam Jalal’s foundational principles remain central to Iraq's political process. 

Under the leadership of President Bafel Jalal Talabani, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) honours his legacy and remains steadfastly committed to his political vision. The PUK reaffirms its dedication to the path charted by Mam Jalal—a path that strengthened the Kurdish struggle, delivered Iraq from dictatorship, and established constitutional mechanisms to resolve historic challenges, including the status of Kirkuk as a city of peaceful coexistence and brotherhood.

On this ninth anniversary of his passing, we pay solemn tribute to the memory of our great national leader.

May peace rest upon the souls of all martyrs of the liberation movements of Kurdistan and Iraq.
