PUK VP Rifaat Abdullah.
Rifaat Abdullah, Vice President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), issued a message to mark the anniversary of the passing of President Mam Jalal, stating that today, Kurdistan, Iraq, and the wider region stand in greater need of the wisdom and measured patience that defined his political vision.
Saturday, 3 October 2026, marks nine years since the death of President Mam Jalal, who remains a central figure in Iraq's political history and a pioneer of the Kurdish national movement.
VP Abdullah's message read:
With deep sorrow and a profound sense of pride, we commemorate the passing of a leader for all eras and the pioneer in the progressive struggle for Kurdish identity, President Mam Jalal. He played a monumental role in the revolutionary, democratic, and liberation struggles of Kurdistan, Iraq, and the wider region, serving as an enduring symbol of inspiration, hope, resilience, and continuity for our people.
On the anniversary of the passing of the 'Uncle of All' [Mam in the name Mam Jalal is the Kurdish word for uncle], we feel the profound void of his absence all the more deeply. Today, Kurdistan, Iraq, and the wider region stand in greater need of the wisdom and measured patience that defined his political vision.
We remain in need of his patriotic vision, his statesmanship, and the rich depth of his experience. His political and personal virtues—notably tolerance, justice, courage, and dedication to serving the people—constitute a historic legacy. As students of Mam Jalal, we embody the political ethos to which he devoted his life.
On this solemn occasion, remaining steadfastly committed to the principles and path for which he sacrificed his political life represents the highest form of loyalty. His memory will endure forever, rendered immortal in the hearts and minds of future generations.
Rifaat Abdullah
Vice President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan
