The Head of Iraq’s Security Media Cell, Lieutenant General Saad Maan, said on Thursday that a large number of weapons have been successfully registered in tribal and remote areas, stressing that carrying weapons outside state control is strictly prohibited.

Speaking to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Maan said the remaining factions are expected to join the initiative to regulate weapons and bring them under state control.

He reiterated that carrying weapons outside the authority of the state is prohibited and that all weapons must be managed and regulated by the state.

Maan said the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Committee for Weapons Regulation was continuing its work as part of a government-backed effort to regulate firearms across the country.

He explained that weapons had been registered in numerous tribal areas, particularly remote regions, adding that the registration process covers both tribes and individual citizens.

According to Maan, the process is important for giving security forces a clearer picture of the quantity and distribution of weapons and forms part of the government’s wider initiative to bring arms under state control.

He added that efforts were continuing to regulate weapons held by factions, tribes and members of the public, with the total number of registered weapons approaching six million.
