The US Department of Defence (the Pentagon) announced on Wednesday that the United States and its Global Coalition partners have formally concluded Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq, marking the end of the Coalition’s military mission in the country.

In a statement, Pentagon Chief Spokesman Sean Parnell said the United States and its Coalition partners had officially concluded Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq, in accordance with the September 2024 US-Iraq agreement.

The Pentagon said Iraqi security forces would now take the lead in securing the country and containing the remaining elements of ISIS.

It added that the US Department of Defence would continue to provide targeted training and intelligence support to its Iraqi partners as part of the next phase of the US-Iraq security relationship.

The Pentagon described the conclusion of the mission as a significant milestone in a 12-year campaign that helped eliminate ISIS as an organised military threat in Iraq and the wider region.

It said the development marked a transition from a wartime military coalition mission to an Iraqi-led security effort, supported by a more conventional bilateral security relationship between Baghdad and Washington.

The US Defence Department said Iraqi security forces, including the Peshmerga and other security forces in the Kurdistan Region, would lead ongoing efforts to secure the country and contain the remaining ISIS threat.

The Pentagon also reaffirmed that the United States would continue providing targeted training and intelligence support to its Iraqi partners.

Washington further reaffirmed its commitment to counter-terrorism efforts and to working with Iraq and its partners to prevent ISIS from regrouping inside Iraqi territory.

According to the Pentagon, the orderly departure of Coalition forces and equipment from Erbil Air Base marks the successful conclusion of the military mission that contributed to the defeat of ISIS in Iraq.
