Iraq will have no Global Coalition personnel stationed in the country after 30 September, Ministry of Defence spokesperson Major General Yahya Rasool has confirmed, highlighting the progress made by Iraqi security and intelligence agencies in combating terrorism and corruption.

Speaking to Al-Iraqiya News, Rasool said there would be no Global Coalition personnel or troops remaining in Iraq after the deadline.

He said the Coalition’s withdrawal was the result of significant efforts by Iraq, stressing that Iraqi forces had liberated the country’s territory with support from the Global Coalition and that Baghdad maintained advanced bilateral relations with Coalition member states.

“No one is above the law,” Rasool said.

He also said an Iraqi intelligence operation had provided information used in the operation that killed Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Rasool said Iraqi intelligence agencies had dealt major blows to terrorism and corruption, while the country’s security forces had made significant progress towards establishing full control over the security situation.

He added that Iraq’s borders had been strengthened with advanced systems and equipment, noting that the country operates aircraft supplied by the United States, France, South Korea and the Czech Republic.

“Iraqi Air Force aircraft are carrying out the airstrikes,” he said.

Regarding Victoria Base, Rasool said the Iraqi Army would use the facility to protect Iraq’s airspace and territory.

He also confirmed that there were no Global Coalition aircraft stationed at Victoria Base.
