The Iraqi ambassador to Iran has announced the partial resumption of flights between the two countries, with passenger services now operating exclusively through Iraqi Airways, while other airlines remain suspended.

Iraqi Ambassador to Iran Yasser Abdul Zahra Hajjaj told Iraq's state media (INA) that Najaf International Airport had been reopened to flights serving Iranian passengers following efforts by Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi.

“The Iraqi government has not issued any decision to suspend flights, but airlines have halted ground services to avoid sanctions,” Hajjaj said.

He added that the resumption of services does not include Iranian aircraft, and that restrictions on Iranian flights over Iraqi airspace remain in place. Iraqi Airways is currently the only carrier authorised to transport passengers between the two countries.

On Friday, Iraq suspended flights to Iran in compliance with US sanctions targeting more than 36 airlines.

Baghdad’s diplomatic efforts subsequently secured a temporary exemption aimed at preventing disruption to air travel for Iraqi pilgrims.
