Russia Launches 165 Drones at Ukraine Overnight, Kyiv Says.
The Ukrainian Air Force has said Russia launched 165 drones at Ukraine overnight, with 112 intercepted by Ukrainian forces.
The attacks came a day after Moscow vowed to achieve its war objectives “regardless of the circumstances”. Russian strikes across several Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv, killed eight people on Sunday.
Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi said three people were killed when a Russian strike hit a children’s centre in the northern city of Sumy, including a 16-year-old girl.
In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said three people were injured and taken to hospital.
Kyiv’s municipal authorities said Russian forces continued to target the capital “ceaselessly” with attack drones. A total of 16 sites were damaged, including 12 homes in the capital’s suburbs, as well as a warehouse and a production facility.
Russia has intensified its attacks on Kyiv as the conflict enters its fifth year, with Ukraine preparing for another winter under wartime conditions.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had struck a data centre belonging to Kyivstar in Kyiv and another operated by Omega Telecom, claiming that both companies provide services to the Ukrainian military.
The ministry also released an image of a drone carrying the inscription “Digital Detox”, saying the strikes were intended to disrupt internet services in Ukraine.
The attacks came a day after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the United Nations General Assembly that Moscow intended to continue its military campaign “to the end”.
Russia’s Defence Ministry also said its forces had captured a border village in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces already control several areas.
Unlike Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, Russia has not announced the annexation of Kharkiv. However, Russian forces have attacked the region and seized territory there since the war began. The Kremlin has repeatedly said it intends to extend its control over the remaining parts of eastern Ukraine.
Meanwhile, US-led diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, which began in 2022, have yet to produce a significant breakthrough, while the United Nations has warned of a rising civilian death toll.
In a social media post, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had launched more than 2,200 attack drones against Ukraine over the previous week, along with around 1,650 aerial bombs and 38 missiles of various types, many of them ballistic.
Zelenskyy accused Moscow of sending misleading signals about peace in an effort to avoid tougher sanctions and a stronger response from Western countries.
“Russia knows how to send the encouraging diplomatic signals the world simply wants to hear, just as it knows how to send such signals to delay the tough measures the world might take in response to the war,” he wrote.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine expected effective decisions from the international community and stronger pressure from its partners, arguing that diplomatic manoeuvring should not allow Moscow to prolong the war.
