The Iraqi government said on Saturday that it is holding direct talks with the United States over exempting certain Iraqi airports from measures imposed by the US Treasury Department on Iranian airline flights to airports across the region, including in Iraq.

In a statement received by PUKMEDIA, the Prime Minister's Media Office said the government was working to secure the necessary exemptions to allow flights to resume.

It said the initiative was driven by humanitarian considerations, including medical treatment, education and religious pilgrimages, as well as the needs and interests of civilians.

The statement said the Iraqi government would continue its efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region, warning that prolonged crises would further complicate the situation.

Baghdad also called on all parties to pursue dialogue and negotiations to find solutions to the current crises and conflicts, in a way that serves the interests of the region's countries and peoples.

The initiative forms part of Iraq's efforts to mitigate the impact of US measures on air travel and address the humanitarian and civilian needs of passengers.
