Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said recognising the cultural and linguistic rights of Kurds in Syria was both a responsibility of his government and a legitimate right of the Kurdish people.

He made the remarks during a panel discussion moderated by former US official Brett McGurk and organised by the Atlantic Council’s Syria Project in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

“Kurds are part of Syrian society and live within this state. Official recognition of Kurdish cultural and linguistic rights is both a duty and a legitimate right,” al-Sharaa said.

He added that, after a century of patience and perseverance, the Kurdish people had secured their rights, noting that an agreement had been reached to introduce Kurdish-language education into school curricula in areas with Kurdish-majority populations.

Al-Sharaa also said Syria would be governed through a partnership that treats all components of society equally, while efforts would continue to amend key laws and rebuild sectors that have ceased to function.
