Qubad Talabani, French Consul General Discuss Strengthening Cooperation

Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, received Emmanuel Mignot, the new French Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, on Monday, 21 September 2026, with the two sides exchanging views on the political situation in the Kurdistan Region and relations between France and the Kurdistan Region.
Talabani welcomed the new French Consul General and wished him success in his new duties.
The meeting also addressed the longstanding historical relations between Kurdistan and France. Talabani expressed his gratitude to the French government and people for their longstanding and continued support for the Kurdish people and the Kurdistan Region since 1991.
Both sides stressed the importance of further strengthening relations across various fields at the current stage and agreed to work together to expand and develop bilateral cooperation.
The meeting also covered the unification and reorganisation of the Peshmerga forces. The French Consul General congratulated the Kurdish people on the unification of the Peshmerga forces. Both sides shared the view that the development could contribute to bringing the political parties closer together and facilitating efforts to form the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet.
In this context, Talabani thanked France for its support and encouragement over the years towards the unification of the Peshmerga forces.
Another topic discussed was Talabani’s recent visit to France and his participation in the Cannes Film Festival. He said that, during the festival, the Kurdistan Film Commission announced the establishment of the largest Kurdish film fund, aimed at further developing Kurdish cinema and strengthening the capabilities of Kurdish filmmakers.
