Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has congratulated the people of the Kurdistan Region and the Peshmerga forces on the completion of the unification of their formations under the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs.

In a statement on X platform, al-Zaidi described the move as an important step towards strengthening national security and reinforcing institutional governance.

He said, "the unification of security and military forces within constitutional and legal frameworks, alongside greater coordination among all branches and formations of the Iraqi Armed Forces, would contribute to consolidating national security."

Al-Zaidi also stressed the importance of ensuring unity in defence decision-making, describing the development as a significant step towards strengthening coordination and institutionalising Iraq's security and military structures.

A ceremony was held on Monday, 21 September 2026, to announce the completion of the reorganisation and unification of the Peshmerga forces.

The ceremony was attended by Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, Vice Presidents Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa and Mustafa Sayyid Qadir, Minister of Peshmerga Affairs Shorsh Ismail, and General Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, Director of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, alongside senior government officials, security and military commanders, representatives of the Global Coalition, ambassadors and consuls.
