Shalaw Kosrat Rasul, a member of the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), said President Bafel Jalal Talabani’s recent visit to Iran had been successful, adding that no date had yet been set for a meeting between the PUK and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

Speaking to the media, Rasul said the situation in the region, particularly developments in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, had been among the key issues discussed during President Bafel’s visit to Iran.

Regarding a meeting between the PUK and KDP, Rasul said no date had yet been set, stressing that the door to dialogue remained open and that discussions between the two parties were continuing. He added that no agreement had yet been reached on the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

“Our coalition with the New Generation Movement continues and remains unchanged. Our agreement covers a range of issues and is not limited to participation in the government,” he said.

The sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament was elected on 20 October 2024, with constituencies covering Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok and Halabja.

The PUK has continued to emphasise what it describes as genuine partnership and the prevention of unilateral rule in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

From the PUK’s perspective, genuine partnership extends beyond participation in government and the distribution of official positions. It also includes a role in major decision-making, political representation and the governance of the country.
