Swedish Election Gives Centre-Left Narrow Lead as Coalition Talks Loom.

Sweden

Preliminary results from Sweden’s general election on Sunday showed the centre-left opposition with a narrow lead over Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s right-wing bloc, leaving the outcome of government formation uncertain.

With most districts counted, the centre-left bloc led by Social Democrat Magdalena Andersson was projected to win 176 of the 349 seats in parliament, compared with 173 for Kristersson’s bloc, according to preliminary results. The final result is not expected until later this week, with overseas and other outstanding ballots still to be counted.

Andersson, who served as prime minister from 2021 to 2022, said her bloc was currently in the lead and indicated that she was prepared to seek to form the next government if the result was confirmed.

However, the Social Democrats were heading for one of their weakest performances in more than a century. The party won around 28.1% of the vote, despite remaining Sweden’s largest political party.

Kristersson Keeps His Options Open

Kristersson’s conservative Moderate Party received around 19.9% of the vote.

The prime minister said he would respect Andersson’s efforts to form a government if the results remained unchanged, but he also planned to explore the possibility of forming a non-socialist government.

Kristersson questioned whether Andersson’s four-party bloc could agree on a joint programme, pointing to political differences between the Left Party and the Centre Party.

“Which government will lead Sweden in the coming years remains an unanswered question,” Kristersson said, according to preliminary reports.

Sweden Democrats Suffer Setback

The far-right Sweden Democrats suffered a significant setback, losing their position as Sweden’s second-largest party and seeing their support fall compared with the previous election.

The party had provided parliamentary support to Kristersson’s government since 2022, and Kristersson had indicated that he would consider bringing it into government if his bloc retained power.

The election campaign focused heavily on issues including the cost of living, healthcare, immigration, crime and law and order. The prospect of the Sweden Democrats entering government was also a major point of political debate.

Difficult Government Talks Ahead

Although Andersson’s centre-left bloc currently holds a three-seat advantage, forming a government could prove difficult because of differences among the four parties.

The final parliamentary balance could also change once the remaining votes are counted. Overseas ballots and other outstanding votes are expected to be included in the final result later this week.

For now, Andersson has the numerical advantage, but Sweden faces potentially difficult coalition negotiations before the next government can be formed.
