Kurdistan Region Marks End of German Forces’ Anti-ISIS Mission.
Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, Vice President of the Kurdistan Region, attended a ceremony in Erbil on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, marking the conclusion of the German forces’ mission as part of the Global Coalition against ISIS in the Kurdistan Region.
The ceremony was attended by Peshmerga Minister Shorsh Ismail, along with a number of military officials from the Kurdistan Region Presidency and the Ministry of Peshmerga.
During the event, Colonel Torsten Piecha, Commander of the German forces within the Global Coalition against ISIS, expressed his gratitude to the relevant authorities in the Kurdistan Region for their support and cooperation throughout the mission. He particularly highlighted coordination between the forces and their joint efforts in defeating ISIS militants in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
For his part, Sheikh Jaafar thanked Germany for its continued support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and praised the contribution of German forces to the Global Coalition’s efforts against ISIS.
He also commended Germany’s role in combating ISIS, training Peshmerga forces, supporting efforts to unify the Peshmerga forces, and providing logistical assistance through the German military team.
