SDF Commander Announces End of Mission and Integration into Syrian State

The commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, announced on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, that the SDF’s mission had come to an end following the integration of its forces into the Syrian state.

“We want this day to mark the beginning of a genuine transition from the battlefields to reconstruction, from the era of weapons to the era of peace, and from defending Syria to building Syria,” Abdi said.

The announcement followed a series of political, military and security meetings held in Damascus since Monday, as part of efforts to implement the 29 January agreement between the SDF and the Syrian Interim Government.

Speaking from the People’s Palace in Damascus, Abdi addressed the head of the Syrian Interim Government, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Syrian people, fellow citizens, his comrades-in-arms and the families of those killed in the conflict.

“Today, we stand before you at a historic moment, turning an important page in Syria’s history and beginning a new chapter of peace, stability and nation-building,” he said.

Abdi said SDF fighters had shouldered a heavy responsibility since the force’s establishment, during one of the most difficult periods in Syria’s history. He said they had liberated numerous Syrian cities and towns, first from Ba’athist rule and later from ISIS terrorism.

He added that both male and female fighters had made significant sacrifices during these battles, with thousands losing their lives in the pursuit of a secure future for Syria’s children.

“Today, circumstances have changed, and the country has entered a new phase defined by peace and participation in building a new Syria,” Abdi said.

“Following the agreement with President al-Sharaa and the completion of the integration of our forces into the brigades of the Syrian Army, we announce today the end of the mission of the Syrian Democratic Forces and, with full responsibility, declare its dissolution as an independent military force.”

Abdi also addressed cultural rights and education in the Kurdish language, describing the right to education in Kurdish as one of the most important rights sought by the Kurdish people for decades.

He said the SDF had observed an openness from the Syrian president towards education in the mother tongue, expressing hope that the current decision would be further developed in the future.
