Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday, saying Tehran would take practical steps to strengthen its relations with Iraq.

Speaking at a press conference, Ghalibaf said the two countries would use his visit to take "significant and practical steps" towards strengthening their shared and individual security.

He described relations between the Iranian and Iraqi peoples as deeply rooted in history, saying their neighbourly ties had been built on "brotherhood during the most difficult times" and a shared sense of common destiny.

"This rich history will serve as a guiding light for the future," he said.

Ghalibaf described Iraq as an important regional country and said his visit would focus on strengthening cooperation among countries in the region without foreign interference.

"Islamic countries in the region need to expand areas of cooperation and establish deep and sustainable relations," he said, adding that Iran was working towards that goal.

Ghalibaf also said he would hold meetings with a number of senior Iraqi government officials during his visit.
