Iraq’s Border Ports Authority Records Record 500 Billion Dinar Revenues In July

The head of Iraq’s Border Ports Authority, Lieutenant General Omar Adnan al-Waeli, said the authority generated more than 500 billion Iraqi dinars in revenues in July, describing the figure as unprecedented and attributing the increase in part to strengthened oversight measures.

Speaking to Al-Iraqiya News, al-Waeli said that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s visit to the authority’s headquarters included directives to tighten oversight, strengthen coordination with judicial and regulatory bodies to combat corruption, and closely monitor the performance of departments operating at Iraq’s border crossings.

He stressed that combating the smuggling of drugs and pharmaceuticals remained a top priority, given the threat such activities pose to Iraqi society and national security.

Al-Waeli said enhanced oversight had played a significant role in boosting revenues, which exceeded 500 billion dinars in July, calling the result “remarkable and unprecedented”.

He also said the authority had made significant progress in governance and digital automation, including completing its integration with the ASYCUDA system and commercial attachés, noting that the measures are intended to strengthen the auditing of invoices and certificates of origin, while reducing fraud, manipulation and forgery in line with the government programme and ministerial plans.

PM al-Zaidi visited the headquarters of the Border Ports Authority on Friday, where he received a detailed briefing on the authority’s oversight operations and electronic port management system. He also reviewed inspection procedures using the sonar network system and observed workflow at airports and seaports, including the auditing of transactions and trucks.
