Syria's Kurdish Goalkeeper Makes History with West Asia's Best Goalkeeper Award

A young Kurdish footballer from Rojava, northeastern Syria, has made history after being named Best Goalkeeper in West Asia, marking a major milestone for girls' football in the region.

Medya Hussein, from Qamishli, has emerged as one of the region's brightest young talents. Born in 2011 and currently in her first year of secondary school, she has overcome limited opportunities and numerous challenges to establish herself as one of the top goalkeepers in West Asian women's football.

In addition to representing the Syrian women's national team, Medya plays at club level for Al Hilal, where she has continued to impress with her performances.

Her passion for football was nurtured from an early age in a sporting family. Both her father and mother are former football players and coaches, while her siblings have also been involved in football and tennis.

Growing up in such an environment inspired Medya to begin her competitive football career in 2022. She progressed through the youth ranks of Jihad and Ahd (Covenant) before joining Al Hilal, earning several Best Goalkeeper awards along the way.
