The Iraqi President Nizar Amedi received a delegation of Yazidi, Christian, Turkmen and Shabak women survivors at the Salam Palace in Baghdad on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, to discuss their circumstances and ways to strengthen their rights while enhancing the support needed for their empowerment and reintegration into society.

The meeting, attended by Minister of Justice Dr Khalid Shwani, focused on measures to ensure justice for survivors and improve the implementation of programmes designed to support their recovery.

During the meeting, President Amedi stressed that securing justice for survivors and safeguarding their dignity is a national responsibility that cannot be compromised. He underlined the importance of continuing to provide comprehensive care, including psychological, social, healthcare and economic support, to help survivors rebuild their lives.

He also highlighted the need to effectively implement programmes and legislation that guarantee survivors’ rights and uphold justice, describing this as a reflection of the state’s commitment to protecting all components of Iraqi society and preserving the dignity of its citizens.

The President reaffirmed that the crimes committed by the ISIS terrorist organisation against the Yazidis, Christians, Turkmen, Shabak and other Iraqi communities would not be forgotten. He said bringing those responsible to justice remains both a national and moral obligation, and called for continued national and international efforts to document the crimes, prevent impunity and ensure justice for the victims while preserving the historical record for future generations.

The survivors expressed their appreciation to President Amedi for his concern and continued attention to their situation. They also stressed the importance of maintaining efforts to support survivors, promote their reintegration into society, and strengthen the values of coexistence and social peace.
