Iraqi President Nizar Amedi Calls Justice for Yazidis a National and Moral Duty

Iraqi President Nizar Amedi has marked the 12th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide by calling for justice for the Yazidi community, describing it as both a national and moral duty. He also urged the return of displaced people, the reconstruction of Shingal (Sinjar), and renewed efforts to address the lasting consequences of the atrocities committed by the ISIS terrorist organisation.

In a statement issued on Monday, President Amedi described the genocide as one of the gravest crimes in Iraq's modern history, saying ISIS had sought not only to kill innocent people but also to eradicate the Yazidi community through murder, enslavement, forced displacement and widespread destruction.

He said the atrocities would remain "a lasting stain on the conscience of humanity", while praising the resilience of the Yazidi people for remaining committed to their homeland, identity and right to live in dignity despite years of suffering.

President Amedi said that, since taking office, he had placed the Yazidi issue among his highest priorities, stressing that securing justice for the community was not solely a matter for one group but a national and moral responsibility that concerned the dignity of all Iraqis.

He called for bold decisions and practical measures to end more than a decade of hardship, including the return of all displaced people to their homes, determining the fate of those still abducted or missing, rebuilding Shingal and other affected areas, compensating victims, and ensuring they are able to live in safety and dignity.

"The continued impact of this tragedy more than a decade later is unacceptable," President Amedi said. "Justice will not be complete until the Yazidi community has its full rights restored."
