A homemade bomb carried by a woman killed three people and injured at least 21 others in an explosion near an upmarket restaurant in central Moscow on Saturday evening, Reuters reported, citing Russian authorities.

Police said the blast occurred shortly before 8:00 p.m. local time near an Italian restaurant in one of Moscow's seven Stalin-era skyscrapers at Kudrinskaya Square, according to Reuters.

According to Russia's Anti-Terrorism Committee, an unidentified woman attempted to enter the restaurant but was stopped by a security guard, state news agency RIA reported. The committee said the woman, the security guard and a customer at the Balzi Rossi Italian restaurant were killed in the subsequent explosion.

More than four years into Russia's full-scale war with Ukraine, the country's Federal Security Service (FSB) said earlier this year that it would strengthen protection for senior military officials following a series of assassinations and attempted attacks that Moscow blamed on Kyiv.

The Kommersant newspaper, citing its own sources, reported that the bomb was apparently intended to target guests seated on the restaurant's outdoor terrace. It suggested the device may have been detonated remotely and that the woman carrying it may not have been aware she was transporting an explosive.
