The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil have issued a security alert warning American citizens of a complex and unpredictable security environment across the Middle East amid heightened regional tensions.
In the alert issued on Saturday, 1 August 2026, the diplomatic missions urged Americans currently in the Middle East to exercise increased caution and remain prepared for possible flight cancellations, temporary airspace closures, and travel disruptions.
The embassy said some airlines in the region have delayed the resumption of previously scheduled flights, while others have cancelled certain routes. It advised Americans in the Middle East to consider leaving the region or be prepared to depart if the security situation deteriorates.
U.S. citizens outside the Middle East were also advised to reconsider travel to and through the region, while those travelling were urged to closely monitor updates regarding airport operations and airline schedules.
The alert noted that U.S. diplomatic facilities, businesses, and other interests have been targeted in various locations, warning that Iran and groups supportive of Tehran could target U.S. interests and locations associated with Americans around the world.
“The situation in the Middle East remains fluid,” the embassy said, adding that the Iranian government’s recent actions demonstrated an unpredictable approach, including attacks in areas that had not previously been targeted.
Regarding Iraq, the U.S. missions advised American citizens to maintain a heightened level of preparedness, follow local media, and comply with instructions issued by local authorities.
The alert warned that travel disruptions and airspace closures could occur with little notice. In the event of an attack, Americans were advised to seek shelter and avoid areas affected by potential hazards.
The embassy also encouraged U.S. citizens to enrol in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest security updates and enable U.S. diplomatic missions to contact them during emergencies.
