Iraqi PM Orders Armed Forces to Maximum Alert, Strengthens Air Defences

Iraq has placed all military units on maximum alert and ordered the rapid reinforcement of its air defence capabilities, as the government seeks to prevent the country from being drawn into escalating regional conflicts, according to the spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces.

Sabah Nu’man, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, said that Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief Ali al-Zaidi had ordered all military units to be placed on maximum alert.

He explained that the measure is intended to prevent any unilateral or irresponsible actions outside the authority of the General Command of the Armed Forces.

Nu’man also stressed the need to accelerate the procurement and deployment of radar, early warning and air defence systems, emphasising that protecting Iraq’s internal security is the exclusive responsibility of the state’s military and security institutions.

He added that certain external actors are attempting to draw Iraqi territory and airspace into broader regional conflicts, but said Iraq’s military and security institutions are responding to developments with the highest levels of preparedness and coordination.
