Iraq and Lebanon Seek to Expand Cooperation

Iraqi President Nizar Amedi received Lebanese Prime Minister Dr Nawaf Salam and his accompanying delegation at Baghdad Palace on Sunday.
According to a statement by the Iraqi Presidency, the two sides discussed the overall bilateral relations between Iraq and Lebanon, stressing the importance of maintaining close communication and expanding collaboration in the political, economic and cultural fields. They also reviewed the latest developments in the region.
President Amedi said the current regional situation requires greater joint efforts to address existing challenges. He reaffirmed Iraq's support for initiatives that promote stability and strengthen Iraqi-Lebanese relations through more effective partnerships in areas of mutual interest, serving the interests of the two brotherly peoples.
The President also reiterated Iraq's support for Lebanon's security and its political and economic stability, stressing the importance of national consensus and strengthening state institutions to safeguard the country's sovereignty and unity.
Addressing the broader regional situation, President Amedi underlined the need to prevent further escalation and to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy in resolving regional crises in a manner that preserves regional and international peace and stability.
For his part, Prime Minister Salam described Iraq as a key Arab partner and said Lebanon is committed to broadening bilateral cooperation through practical projects and programmes that reflect the shared interests of both countries. He also expressed appreciation for Iraq's continued support for Lebanon's security and stability.
The meeting was attended on the Iraqi side by Finance Minister Faleh al-Sari, Oil Minister Basim al-Abadi, Communications Minister Mustafa Sanad, and the head of the Arab Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Osama al-Rifai.
The Lebanese delegation included Finance Minister Yassin Jaber, Minister of Energy and Water Joseph al-Saddi, Communications Minister Charles al-Hajj, Lebanon's Ambassador to Iraq Khalil Abdullah Mohammed, and Director General of General Security Major General Hassan Shqeir.
