The footballing world turns its attention to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey today, where Argentina and Spain will meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, bringing an end to a memorable 40-day tournament featuring 104 matches.

Defending champions Argentina are aiming to retain the World Cup and claim a record-extending fourth title. The South Americans will once again be led by captain Lionel Messi, who is widely expected to be making his final appearance on football's biggest stage.

Spain, meanwhile, are seeking to lift the World Cup for only the second time in their history, having previously won the tournament in 2010. La Roja have impressed throughout the competition with a youthful squad that has produced a series of commanding performances.

The final is expected to showcase two contrasting footballing philosophies. Spain are renowned for their possession-based style and rapid passing, while Argentina have combined a disciplined defensive structure with clinical attacking play to reach the tournament's showpiece.

Argentina booked their place in the final by defeating Cape Verde in the Round of 32, Egypt in the Round of 16 and Switzerland in the quarter-finals before overcoming England 2–1 in the semi-finals.

Spain's route to the final included victories over Austria in the Round of 16, Portugal in the quarter-finals and a 2–0 win against France in the semi-finals.

Notably, neither side required a penalty shootout to progress through the knockout stages, underlining their consistency and quality ahead of the decisive contest for football's greatest prize.
