Sasanian-Era Artefacts Unearthed During Excavations on Erbil–Koya Highway

A collection of artefacts dating back to the Sasanian era has been discovered during excavation work along the Erbil–Koya highway and is currently being preserved by the Koya Antiquities Directorate.

In a statement, the Directorate said the discoveries include ceramic jars, mirrors, cosmetic tools used for applying eye make-up, fragments of pottery and a seal, all dating to the Sasanian period.

The Directorate explained that two locations along the highway had previously been identified as archaeological sites, noting that in 2022, it submitted a request through a Chinese university to carry out archaeological excavations. However, the project was delayed because of a lack of funding.

Following the start of construction on the Erbil–Koya highway, the contracting company agreed to finance the archaeological excavations within the affected area.

Excavation work began at the end of May, with most of the fieldwork completed within a month. Archaeologists are now continuing the process of sorting, documenting and cleaning the recovered artefacts.
