Israel and Iran have exchanged direct attacks for the first time since a ceasefire was reached earlier this year, in a major escalation that has renewed fears of a wider conflict across the Middle East.

Tensions rose sharply overnight after Iran launched a wave of missiles towards Israel, prompting air raid sirens in several areas and sending residents to shelters. Israeli authorities said the country’s air defence systems intercepted a number of the missiles, while emergency services were deployed across affected regions. Initial reports indicated limited casualties and damage, although officials continued to assess the situation.

The Iranian attack came shortly after Israeli warplanes carried out strikes targeting sites linked to Hezbollah in Beirut and southern Lebanon. Israeli officials said the operation was aimed at preventing what they described as militant activity threatening Israeli security. Iran, a key backer of Hezbollah, condemned the strikes and accused Israel of violating regional stability and escalating tensions deliberately.

In response to the missile launches, Israel carried out retaliatory strikes inside Iran, targeting what Israeli military sources described as military infrastructure and strategic facilities. Iranian state media reported explosions in several locations, including Tehran and Isfahan, though the full extent of the damage was not immediately clear.

The exchange marks the first direct military confrontation between Israel and Iran since the ceasefire agreement that had temporarily reduced hostilities following months of regional unrest and cross-border violence involving Iran-backed armed groups.

The latest developments have triggered growing international concern, with world leaders and regional powers urging both sides to exercise restraint. The United States called for immediate de-escalation, warning that further military action could destabilise the entire region. The United Nations also appealed for calm and stressed the need to prevent a broader war.
