Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met on Monday with Albrecht von Wittke, Consul General of Germany in the Kurdistan Region, and Andrew Bizley, Consul General of United Kingdom in the Kurdistan Region, separately.

During two meetings held on Monday (25 May 2026) in Erbil, discussions focused on the political situation in the Kurdistan Region and the delay in the formation of the tenth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Referring to the political differences and the stagnation in negotiations, Talabani stressed that a way forward must be found to end the stalemate and enable all sides to move towards a new phase, warning that the continuation of the current situation will further undermine the position of the Region, as well as the lives and welfare of citizens.  

Regarding relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, he said: “We have long maintained that Baghdad is central to our strategic depth, and as Kurds we must strengthen our presence there.”

He emphasised that the formation of the new federal government in Baghdad presents a valuable opportunity to resolve outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government across a range of matters. However, he stressed that achieving this requires greater cooperation and coordination among Kurdish parties.

The meetings also included an exchange of views on regional developments. In this context, the Deputy Prime Minister pointed to the progress made in talks between the United States and Iran and expressed hope that the negotiations would produce positive results and contribute to peace and stability in the region.
