Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi.
A lawmaker of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in the Iraqi Parliament announced on Tuesday the postponement of the parliamentary session to vote on the new government headed by Ali al-Zaidi.
PUK Lawmaker Srwa Mohammed told PUKMEDIA that although they had expected the Speaker of Parliament to include the vote on the new government in the parliamentary agenda for this week, the session has been postponed.
She added that, according to Parliament’s bylaws, the legislature will enter recess starting 3 May 2026. However, the current legislative session had been extended for one month to allow time for a vote on the new government.
"If the cabinet is not voted on within this period, the vote is expected to be delayed until after the Eid al-Adha holiday," she said.
She further explained that, under the Constitution, some ministerial posts may remain vacant and be voted on later, particularly amid ongoing disagreements over certain security portfolios. However, the parliament can still proceed with voting on the Prime Minister and those ministries whose nominations have already been agreed upon.
According to the Iraqi Constitution, the Prime Minister-designate has 30 days to form the new government following his official appointment by the President.
On 27 April 2026, Iraqi President Nizar Amedi officially tasked Ali al-Zaidi with forming the new government after his nomination on the same day by the Coordination Framework.
