The council said in a statement: "Every day, nurses both save and improve lives, and their impact is greatest when they are properly empowered. At a moment of extraordinary global pressure, this year’s International Nurses Day theme focuses on making the structural changes needed to harness the power of the nursing workforce. Building on the last two International Nurses Day reports - The Economic Power of Care and Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies - this new theme highlights the vital role of the nursing workforce to improve health outcomes and deliver the trusted, person-centred primary care that can transform health systems and address our world’s biggest health challenges." 

International Nurses Day is celebrated annually on 12 May to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the renowned nurse and social reformer who was born on 12 May 1820. She is remembered for her extraordinary work during the Crimean War and is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing.

Florence Nightingale became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” because she would walk through the night carrying a lamp while caring for wounded soldiers. During the war, infections among injured troops spread rapidly, resulting in a high number of deaths. However, her treatment methods, hygiene practices, and dedicated care significantly improved recovery rates and saved countless lives.

Her remarkable contributions not only transformed patient care, but also helped establish nursing as a respected profession for women.
