Iraqi Parliament Says Preparations for Vote on New Government Completed

The Secretary-General of the Iraqi Parliament, Safwan al-Jarjeri, announced the completion of all preparations for the parliamentary session to vote on the new cabinet headed by Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi.

In a statement to the Iraqi state media (INA), al-Jarjeri said the Parliament had finalised all arrangements for the session, noting that, as with previous government approval sessions, invitations had been sent to political and diplomatic leaders.

He added that invitations to political leaders, the Coordination Committee and the Political Council would begin being distributed on Sunday, while Parliament was awaiting the Speaker of Parliament to determine the date of the session, whether on Monday or Tuesday.

Meanwhile, MP Dr Bryar Rashid of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc told PUKMEDIA that Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi had submitted his ministerial programme to Parliament in accordance with the constitutional procedures for forming the new government.

He added that a vote of confidence on the new Iraqi government was expected to take place this week, based on ongoing political agreements among the parliamentary blocs.

For his part, MP Ramyar Haider of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc told PUKMEDIA that most government positions had already been agreed upon, indicating that the Kurds would receive four ministries, likely including Foreign Affairs, Environment or Higher Education, Justice, and Reconstruction and Housing.

He explained that the deputy prime minister posts would be allocated to Kurds and Sunnis, while the vice-presidential positions would be shared between Sunnis and Shiites.

Iraq's Coordination Framework held a meeting on 27 April 2026 at the Government Palace in Baghdad, during which member parties agreed to nominate Ali al-Zaidi for the post of prime minister. Following the nomination, Iraqi President Nizar Amedi formally tasked him with forming the country’s next government.
