UN Chief António Guterres Congratulates President Nizar Amedi.
Nizar Amedi received a congratulatory message from António Guterres on the occasion of assuming the presidency, with the UN chief wishing him success and prosperity in his new role.
In his message, Guterres said the assumption of office by President Amedi and the formation of a new government marked an important step towards advancing sustainable development efforts and strengthening the principles of participation and representation for all components of Iraqi society.
The UN Secretary-General also reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to continuing constructive cooperation with Iraq in support of development, stability and the aspirations of the Iraqi people.
President Amedi, Spanish Ambassador Hold Talks on Strengthening Iraq–Spain Relations
Separately, President Amedi received Alicia Rico Pérez del Pulgar at the Salam Palace in Baghdad on Thursday, 7 May 2026. The ambassador congratulated him on assuming the presidency.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations between Iraq and Spain, as well as ways to strengthen joint cooperation across various fields. President Amedi stressed the importance of enhancing ties with Spain and deepening partnership between the two countries in a manner that serves their mutual interests.
For her part, the Spanish ambassador expressed her wishes for continued security, stability and prosperity for Iraq, while reaffirming Spain’s commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in support of progress and prosperity for both nations.
