First Hearing Opens in Trial of Anfal Perpetrator “Hajjaj Nugrat al-Salman”

The first hearing in the trial of one of the most prominent perpetrators of the Anfal crimes during the era of the former Ba’athist regime, Ajaj Ahmed Hardan al-Tikriti, known as “Hajjaj Nugrat al-Salman”, is due to take place today, Thursday. He is accused of committing some of the most brutal crimes against detainees at Nugrat al-Salman prison in the Samawah desert in southern Iraq, where he oversaw the facility to which detainees were transferred during the Anfal operations.
The Iraqi High Criminal Court is set to hold its first hearing in the case against Ajaj after more than 300 complaints were filed by victims of the Anfal campaign.
According to information obtained by PUKMEDIA, more than 200 people, including relatives of martyrs and victims who were detained at Nugrat al-Salman prison, are expected to attend today’s hearing. They will submit complaints against the accused, who is alleged to have committed grave crimes and subjected prisoners to all forms of torture and killing.
Ajaj is accused of carrying out some of the most heinous crimes against detainees at Nugrat al-Salman prison in the Samawah desert, including the torture and killing of large numbers of Anfal victims, particularly women and children. During the investigation, he reportedly confessed to the charges against him, especially those relating to crimes committed against the Kurds.
