Ajaj Ahmed Hardan al-Tikriti.
The first hearing in the case of one of the most prominent perpetrators of the Anfal crimes during the former Ba’athist regime, Ajaj Ahmed Hardan al-Tikriti, known as “Hajjaj Nugrat al-Salman,” is scheduled to take place on Thursday.
Al-Tikriti is accused of committing serious crimes against detainees at Nugrat al-Salman prison in the desert of Muthanna Governorate in southern Iraq, where he served as a supervisor during the Anfal operations, when prisoners were transferred to the facility.
The Iraqi High Criminal Court is due to open proceedings after more than 300 complaints were submitted by victims of the Anfal campaign.
According to information obtained by PUKMEDIA, more than 200 survivors and victims’ families are expected to attend the hearing, where they will present testimony and formal complaints relating to alleged torture, killings and other abuses.
Al-Tikriti is accused of overseeing severe mistreatment of detainees, including women and children, during the Anfal operations, which targeted Kurdish areas in the late 1980s. He is alleged to have been responsible for acts of torture and extrajudicial killings at the prison facility.
Reports also indicate that during the investigation phase, he made admissions regarding some of the charges, particularly those related to crimes against Kurdish detainees.
