Karwan Gaznay, the Spokesperson for Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has strongly condemned a drone attack targeting a civilian home in Zargazawi village in Erbil province, which resulted in the killing of a couple.
In a statement issued on Tuesday 7 April, Gaznay said: "We strongly condemn the targeting of civilian homes in Zargazawi village in Erbil province, which tragically resulted in the martyrdom of a couple."
"Targeting civilian homes is not only a violation of territorial sovereignty, but is also considered a “war crime” under international customs and law, and cannot be justified under any circumstances," he said. "We reaffirm that the primary objective of President Bafel Jalal Talabani and the PUK is the protection of our land and people."
"We also emphasise the need to safeguard the stability and security of the citizens of Kurdistan, and reiterate that the Kurdistan Region must not be drawn into ongoing wars and conflicts, as the protection of the lives and dignity of our citizens remains our highest priority," he added.
A husband and his wife were killed in a drone attack in Erbil province, bringing the total number of victims from recent incidents in the Kurdistan Region to 16.
The attack took place at approximately 12:15 a.m. in Zargazawi village, within the Darashakran district of Erbil province. According to available information, two civilians—Musa Anwar and Mujda Asad—were killed while sleeping in their home.
The couple’s two young daughters, aged four and two, were reported to be unharmed at the time of the explosion.
Local sources confirmed that the targeted location was a civilian residence, with no military presence in the area. Two drones were reportedly involved in the attack: the first landed in a nearby desert area, while the second struck the family home directly.
The incident comes amid a broader escalation in the region following the outbreak of conflict on 28 February 2026, after Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran. Since then, the Kurdistan Region has been subjected to repeated drone and missile attacks, resulting in both civilian and military casualties.
According to available figures, a total of 16 people have been killed so far, including six Peshmerga members and two civilians. The number of drone and missile attacks across the Kurdistan Region has reached 680.
