The Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs of the Kurdistan Region has strongly condemned a series of drone attacks targeting Kurdistan Peshmerga Forces, warning that continued inaction by Iraqi authorities may prompt a shift in its position.
In a statement issued on Monday, 6 April 2026, the Ministry confirmed that on the night of 5 April, outlawed terrorist groups carried out four drone attacks against a Peshmerga headquarters, noting that the attack forms part of a broader pattern of escalating violence in recent days, with multiple Peshmerga positions targeted across different areas of the Kurdistan Region.
According to the Ministry, the attacks have been conducted openly and in the presence of Iraqi army units and security forces, resulting in significant casualties and damage. It expressed concern that such incidents continue to occur without effective intervention from federal authorities.
The statement criticised the lack of a decisive response from the Iraqi federal government, including the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Joint Operations Command, and other Iraqi security institutions, noting that no serious measures have been taken to prevent further attacks.
Reaffirming the role of the Peshmerga within Iraq’s broader security framework, the Ministry stressed that its forces remain a key component of the country’s defence system, having consistently contributed to the protection of both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole.
While underscoring that it has so far exercised restraint in the interests of all Iraqi and Kurdish citizens, the Ministry warned that continued silence or inaction from Baghdad would not be sustainable. It called for immediate steps to halt the violations and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The Ministry concluded by signalling that, should the federal government fail to adopt a clear and effective stance, it may be compelled to take further measures in response to the ongoing threat.
Amid the continuing regional conflict, multiple areas across the Kurdistan Region have come under repeated drone attacks.
According to the Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT) – Iraqi Kurdistan, more than 470 attacks have targeted the Kurdistan Region since the beginning of the Iran war on 28 February.
The organisation also reported that 14 people have been killed (martyred) and over 90 others injured as a result of the ongoing strikes.
