Iraq's Karkh Criminal Court on Sunday sentenced a member of the Islamic State (ISIS) to death for involvement in terrorist attacks targeting security forces and the abduction of Yazidi women.
According to a statement from the Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council, obtained by PUKMEDIA, the convicted individual participated in terrorist operations against both security personnel and civilians.
The statement added that the militant, along with his group, carried out crimes in Shingal in 2014, including the killing of men and the abduction of Yazidi women, as part of efforts to destabilise the country and spread terror among the population.
It further noted that the sentence was issued in accordance with Article 4/1, in conjunction with Articles 2/1, 3, and 8 of Iraq’s Counter-Terrorism Law No. 13 of 2005, as well as Article 7(First) of the Yazidi Survivors Law No. 8 of 2021.
The Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organisation seized vast parts of northern and western Iraq in June 2014. Two months later, on 3 August 2014, the organisation launched a genocide against the Yazidi community in the Shingal (Sinjar) district, which is heart of the Yazidi land and is located in northern Iraq. They kidnapped over 6,400 Yazidi women and children, where they were later used for sexual slavery and forced labour. In the space of a few weeks, more than 5,000 Yazidis were killed.
