Air strikes on Lebanon.
Lebanese authorities have reported that nearly 760,000 people have been displaced since the outbreak of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel, as Israeli airstrikes resumed in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut following new evacuation warnings.
The conflict spilled over into Lebanon after Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the first day of US-Israeli strikes. Israel has responded with extensive airstrikes and incursions into southern Lebanon.
According to the Lebanese government’s Disaster Management Unit, the number of “self-registered” displaced persons since 2 March has reached 759,300, including over 122,000 people accommodated in official government shelters.
Authorities have converted schools and other public facilities, such as the Beirut Sports City complex, into temporary shelters for those displaced.
The Disaster Risk Management Unit at the Prime Minister’s office reported that Israeli airstrikes have killed 570 people and injured 1,444. On Tuesday, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) evacuated the predominantly Christian town of Alma al-Shaab, located on the border with Israel, after residents refused to leave despite calls from the Israeli army.
