Russia has indicated at recent talks in Geneva that it would accept the United States’ proposal regarding post-war security guarantees for Ukraine, the chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday.
"At the last talks, the Russian side said for example that they would accept the security guarantees offered to Ukraine by the United States," said top aide Kyrylo Budanov in an interview aired on Ukrainian television.
U.S. President Donald Trump is urging Moscow and Kyiv to reach an agreement to end Europe’s largest war since 1945. However, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has complained that Ukraine is facing greater pressure to make concessions.
Kyiv is seeking firm security guarantees that would commit the United States and its European allies to take action should Russia launch another attack after a peace settlement is reached.
The latest round of peace talks, held in Geneva last week, failed to produce a breakthrough. Both Kyiv and Moscow described the discussions as difficult, although Washington said it had seen “meaningful progress”.
Meanwhile, Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, said that Russia has not agreed to a proposed summit between President Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The possibility of such a meeting had previously been raised by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff.
