Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, on Sunday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral trade and exploring potential cooperation in semiconductors, defence and other key sectors.
Modi is on a two-day official visit to Malaysia, his first since India and Malaysia elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in August 2024.
Prime Minister Anwar said the partnership encompasses deep cooperation across a wide range of areas, including trade and investment, food security, defence, healthcare and tourism.
"It's really comprehensive, and we believe that we can advance this and execute in a speedy manner with the commitment of our both governments," he told a press conference after hosting Modi at his official residence in the administrative capital Putrajaya.
Following their meeting, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also witnessed the exchange of 11 cooperation agreements, covering areas such as semiconductors, disaster management and peacekeeping operations.
Anwar said India and Malaysia would continue their efforts to promote the use of local-currency settlement for cross-border transactions and expressed hope that bilateral trade would exceed last year’s figure of $18.6 billion.
He also confirmed that Malaysia would support India’s plans to open a consulate in the state of Sabah on the island of Borneo.
