Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, has stressed that a caretaker government in the Kurdistan Region is unable to properly resolve the region’s political and economic challenges.
Deputy PM Talabani made the remarks during a meeting with Irfan Sadiq, British Ambassador to Iraq. The meeting, held on Sunday, 2 February 2026, was attended by Andrew Bizley, the British Consul General to the Kurdistan Region.
Discussions focused on the formation of the next Iraqi government, where Deputy PM Talabani pointed to the region's developments, as well as the internal political situation in Iraq and emphasised that Iraqi political forces must take regional developments and the demands of Iraqi citizens into serious consideration when forming the new government.
He said the country needs a government capable of preserving stability while taking meaningful steps towards economic development and improving public services across Iraq.
The talks also addressed the formation of the next Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Deputy PM Talabani outlined the obstacles hindering the process, describing the establishment of a new cabinet as a fundamental necessity to protect and strengthen the political and structure of the Kurdistan Region.
“This government is a caretaker government and is not suited to the magnitude of the challenges of this stage,” Deputy PM Talabani said, adding that it is unable to gain the trust of the Kurdish public or international partners, nor can it take the required steps to effectively address the Region’s problems.
