US Senator Chris Coons has reaffirmed that Washington must support Kurdish forces in Syria, describing them as among the United States’ most effective partners in the fight against the Islamic State.
In a statement on X, Coons said that Kurdish forces have played a crucial role for years in combating ISIS, contributing significantly to the group’s territorial defeat and to broader counterterrorism efforts in the region. He stressed that the United States must continue to stand by its Kurdish partners as part of efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.
“Our Kurdish allies in Syria have for years been among our most effective partners in combatting the Islamic State,” Coons said. “The United States must continue to stand with our Kurdish partners as we pursue peace in the Middle East.”
The remarks come amid heightened concern over security developments in northern and eastern Syria, where Kurdish forces remain a key actor in maintaining stability and preventing a resurgence of ISIS. Coons’ statement adds to a growing number of voices in the US Congress calling for sustained engagement and support for the Kurds in the region.
Many US officials and lawmakers have repeatedly highlighted the importance of cooperation with Kurdish forces, both to safeguard gains made against ISIS and to support broader diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving long-term stability in Syria and the wider region.
