French Member of Parliament Thomas Portes has called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in northern Syria, warning that ongoing hostilities are placing Kurdish communities under existential threat and undermining prospects for peace.
“There must be a permanent ceasefire. Peace talks cannot succeed without it,” Portes said, stressing that continued military pressure makes any political process impossible.
Referring to the situation in Kobani, a city that became a global symbol of the fight against ISIS, he warned of a worsening humanitarian and security crisis. “Kobani, the symbolic city of the fight against and the fall of ISIS, is surrounded, under fire and tank attacks, under siege without water and without electricity, despite the so-called truce signed with the Syrian army,” he stated.
Portes described the current situation as “an existential fight for the Kurds and against jihadist terrorists,” highlighting the broader implications for regional and international security.
The French lawmaker also revealed that representatives of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, along with the commander of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), were received via Video conference at the French National Assembly on the previous day to discuss the emergency facing Kurdish communities in Syria.
“Yesterday, we welcomed at the National Assembly representatives of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), as well as the commander of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), to discuss the emergency situation of the Kurds in Syria,” Portes said, noting that around twenty national and international media outlets attended the press briefing.
