SOMO Confirms Export of 19 Million Barrels from Kurdistan Region Under Oil Agreement

The State Oil Marketing Organisation (SOMO) has announced that 19 million barrels of oil were exported from the Kurdistan Region over a three-month period, confirming that shipments are continuing in line with the signed agreement.

The Iraqi News Agency quoted SOMO Director General Ali Nizar al-Shatri as saying that oil deliveries from the Kurdistan Region are proceeding under the existing agreement. He stressed that all parties are working to comply with the agreed terms, in accordance with the operational conditions of the oil fields and logistical requirements.

Al-Shatri explained that the volumes received and exported from the start of the agreement on 27 September 2025 until the end of December 2025 totalled approximately 19 million barrels, averaging around 6 million barrels per month. He noted that the global oil industry requires monthly adjustments to production and export levels due to technical and operational factors, adding that the quantities received from the region — and their share of Iraq’s total exports — fluctuate slightly within acceptable limits and in line with internationally recognised industry practices.

The Federal Ministry of Oil announced on 27 September 2025 the resumption of crude oil exports from the Kurdistan Region via the Iraqi-Turkish pipeline, describing the move as a reflection of successful cooperation between the federal and regional governments.

Two days earlier, on 25 September 2025, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani described the agreement to export oil from Kurdistan Region fields through the Iraqi-Turkish pipeline as “historic”, saying it would ensure fair wealth distribution, diversify export routes and encourage investment — an outcome long awaited for 18 years. The Kirkuk–Ceyhan pipeline had been shut since 25 March 2023, following a ruling by the International Court of Arbitration in Paris ordering Türkiye to pay Iraq $1.5 billion in compensation for damages linked to unauthorised oil exports between 2014 and 2018. Türkiye later appealed the decision.
