Renewed clashes between Cambodia and Thailand have intensified along their disputed border, forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee and prompting calls for international intervention. The hostilities, now entering a fourth consecutive day, mark the most serious escalation in years.

According to multiple reports, both sides have exchanged artillery fire, rockets and drone strikes, with each government accusing the other of initiating the latest round of violence. The clashes erupted after the collapse of a fragile ceasefire agreed only weeks earlier.

Thailand’s military confirmed fresh bombardments in contested areas, while Cambodia has accused Bangkok of “unprovoked aggression”. Neither side has shown signs of backing down, and the disputed zones remain highly volatile.

Rising Casualties and Mass Displacement

Local authorities and international agencies report dozens of deaths, including civilians and soldiers on both sides. The Financial Times noted that more than 500,000 people have been displaced, seeking safety far from the fighting as border villages continue to be shelled.

The conflict has begun affecting regional events. Cambodia announced it was withdrawing its team from the Southeast Asian Games being hosted in Thailand, citing security concerns amid the escalating violence.

Longstanding Territorial Dispute

The clashes are rooted in a century-old border disagreement, particularly around areas near the Preah Vihear temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Although the International Court of Justice ruled on the dispute in 2013, tensions have persisted, with border skirmishes flaring periodically.

Analysts warn that unless both sides restore dialogue, the current escalation risks dragging on, causing further humanitarian suffering and destabilising the wider region.
