Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, has emphasised the need for a unified approach to combat digital violence against women, highlighting the role of Kurdish culture in empowering women.
In a statement, Deputy PM Talabani said: “Kurds are a lucky nation that has a culture despite some shortcomings, it is rich with respect to the status of women within the family and society. The courage of Kurdish women fighters who have impressed the world stems in large part from the rich culture in which men bow their heads in respect to brave and free women.”
“By drawing inspiration from our authentic culture and adapting to the values and developments of our modern era, we must clear our society from all forms of violence against women and create broader opportunities for women to participate in political, social, and economic life, while also strengthening the foundation of healthy family,” he said.
Deputy PM Talabani also highlighted this year’s global campaign, saying: “This year’s global theme is UNiTE to end digital violence against all women and girls.”
Addressing the ongoing issue of violence, he noted: “Unfortunately, this phenomenon has developed in various ways in our society for years. Therefore, we emphasise the need for all of us to work together with all our differences to develop and implement a national plan and strategy to end this kind of violence against women in Kurdistan.”
The United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with the aim of raising global awareness of the scale of violence faced by women worldwide, including rape, domestic abuse, and other forms of violence.
The 2025 campaign, UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls, seeks to mobilise all sectors of society. Governments are urged to end impunity by enforcing laws that criminalise such violence; technology companies must ensure the safety of their platforms and remove harmful content; donors should provide the necessary funding to enable feminist organisations to combat this abuse; and individuals are called upon to raise their voices and support survivors.
